Armed Man Holed Up in Tenerife Home Sparks Police Standoff
A man armed with a knife has barricaded himself in his Tenerife home, prompting a police standoff and negotiation efforts due to concerns about his mental health.
A man in his 30s or 40s has locked himself in his house in Ofra, Tenerife, and is armed with a knife. This has caused a large police presence in the area, near the Civil Guard headquarters in the Santa Cruz de Tenerife neighborhood.
Eyewitnesses say that residents called the police after seeing their neighbor with a knife in the street. He then went inside his house on Tagore Street and locked the door.
Initial reports suggested the man may have threatened a woman or that someone else was inside the house with him, but the National Police have said this isn't the case.
Sources say the man has a history of mental health issues, and neighbors report that he has been involved in incidents in the neighborhood before.
Local and National Police are at the scene, and the fire department and an ambulance are on standby.
A negotiator from the National Police is also there, trying to talk to the man and persuade him to open the door.
