Arico City Council has launched a formal legal challenge against the proposed Primavera offshore wind farm, citing concerns over misleading project timelines, insufficient environmental data, and the negative economic impact on local fishing communities.

Arico City Council has launched a formal legal and technical challenge against the proposed Primavera offshore wind farm, planned for the waters near the port of Granadilla. Led by Mayor Andrés Martínez and Environment Councilor Olivia Delgado, the council argues that while the project is labeled "experimental," it is designed to operate for 25 years, making its current status misleading.

The council’s primary objection is that the project does not align with existing state planning, which they argue undermines the initiative's territorial coherence. Beyond these administrative concerns, local officials are worried about the project's environmental impact. Councilor Delgado claims the developer’s environmental study lacks scientific rigor, specifically noting a shortage of field data regarding local bird and whale populations.

The municipality is also concerned about the economic impact on the area. The wind farm would occupy over 441,000 square meters of ocean, which the council argues will disrupt traditional fishing. They contend that the project forces the local community to bear the burden of lost fishing grounds and coastal disruption without receiving any compensation in return.

Arico’s government has made it clear that they will not stop at these initial objections. They are prepared to escalate their legal efforts and seek support from other institutions to block the project. The council insists that a thorough review of the entire proposal is a non-negotiable requirement before any construction can proceed.
