Archaeological Investigation Launched After Human Remains Discovered in Garachico

Human remains discovered on the coast of Garachico have triggered an official archaeological investigation to determine their age and origin. The remains—a jawbone and a piece of a femur—were exposed after a landslide on a slope just meters from the shoreline.

Authorities are emphasizing the need for careful coordination to ensure the site is studied properly. Unlike past cases where remains were simply removed for forensic analysis, the Canary Islands’ General Directorate of Cultural Heritage is prioritizing the preservation of the site itself. Eduardo Mesa, the Inspector General of Cultural Heritage in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, stated that the immediate goal is to protect the area from looting or disturbance so that a specialized team, led by expert Luana Studer, can conduct a proper scientific excavation.

While initial visual checks suggest the remains do not date back to the pre-Hispanic period, officials are being cautious about drawing any firm conclusions. There is speculation that the site could be linked to the Spanish Civil War, but authorities insist it is too early to confirm this. The Daute region has a history of such discoveries; between 1972 and 2010, erosion in the nearby Los Silos area uncovered human remains that eventually led to historical memory projects funded by the Cabildo de Tenerife.

A technical team is scheduled to begin work this Tuesday to determine if the site is a mass grave or an isolated burial. Despite being exposed to the elements, the bones are in a condition that should allow for detailed scientific analysis. Local police, the Civil Guard, the Institute of Legal Medicine, and regional authorities are working together to secure the area, ensuring that the upcoming study can provide clear answers and put an end to speculation.
