APT Nominates Izquierdo, Alonso for 2026 Canary Islands Communication Award

The Association of Journalists of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has jointly nominated Eliseo Izquierdo Pérez and Elfidio Alonso Quintero for the 2026 Canary Islands Communication Award, recognizing their extensive careers in journalism and other fields.

The Association of Journalists of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (APT) has put forward Eliseo Izquierdo Pérez and Elfidio Alonso Quintero as joint nominees for the 2026 Canary Islands Communication Award.

This nomination was decided at an APT meeting on December 10. After much discussion, everyone agreed to propose both journalists. They were chosen for their long and dedicated careers in journalism and communication across various media. They also made important contributions to teaching, research, art, and literature.

Eliseo Izquierdo Pérez, born in La Laguna in 1931, holds degrees in Journalism and Romance Philology from the University of La Laguna (ULL), and a degree in Information Sciences from the Autonomous University of Madrid. Beyond his work as a journalist, he taught at the University of La Laguna, IES Cabrera Pinto (Taco sector), and the Diocesan Seminary of Tenerife. He became a full member of the Royal Canarian Academy of Fine Arts in 1972 and an honorary member in 2010, serving as its secretary from 1972 to 2001 and president from 2001 to 2009. He is also a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Saint Isabel of Hungary in Seville and the Academy of Arts and Sciences of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The APT values both candidates' journalistic achievements and their contributions in other fields.

Elfidio Alonso Quintero, born in La Laguna in 1935, is a journalist and writer, as well as a musician, composer, researcher, and folklorist. He also entered politics, serving as mayor of his hometown and as a deputy in the Parliament of the Canary Islands. He holds degrees in Law and Journalism from the University of La Laguna and has worked for many different media organizations. As a writer, he has explored various genres, including plays, poetry, short stories, novels, and essays. Alonso is well-known for promoting Canarian music and its connections to popular Latin American rhythms. In 2018, he received an honorary award at the first Canary Islands Music Awards for his impact on island culture. He has published many works, including over 300 popular and folk songs with the group Los Sabandeños, which he founded and directed.
