The animated film Winnipeg, the Ship of Hope, which chronicles Pablo Neruda’s historic mission to rescue Spanish Civil War refugees, premieres in Spanish theaters on June 5th.

An upcoming animated film, Winnipeg, the Ship of Hope, is set to bring a pivotal chapter of the Spanish Republican exile to life. The film premieres in Spanish theaters on June 5th, chronicling the journey of refugees who fled the collapse of the Second Republic to find safety in Chile.

This international co-production from Spain, Chile, and Argentina highlights the efforts of poet Pablo Neruda. While serving as a consul in Paris, Neruda and his partner, Delia del Carril, organized a massive rescue mission to help thousands of refugees living in desperate conditions in French internment camps. The story centers on the Winnipeg, a French freighter originally built for a small crew that carried over 2,200 exiles on a month-long voyage across the Atlantic and Pacific to the port of Valparaíso.

Directed by Beñat Beitia and Elio Quiroga, the film focuses on the personal story of a father and his daughter. Through their bond, the narrative explores themes of displacement and resilience in the face of political hardship. The film will be available in Spanish, Catalan, and Basque, and features a talented creative team, including Goya-nominated composer Diego Navarro and veteran character designer Miguel Francisco.

Beyond its artistic merit, the film serves as an important tool for historical education, highlighting the power of animation to preserve memory. It joins a growing body of work documenting the mass exodus that followed the fall of Barcelona in 1939, a defining moment that shaped the long-standing cultural and diplomatic ties between Spain and South America.
