Andrea Abreu Returns With New Novel 'Pajaritos Preñados'
Andrea Abreu returns to the literary scene on September 2nd with her highly anticipated new novel, Pajaritos preñados, an introspective exploration of identity and environment set in her native Tenerife.
Spanish literature fans are eagerly awaiting September 2nd, when Anagrama will publish Pajaritos preñados, the new novel by Andrea Abreu. This release marks the Tenerife-born author’s return to the literary scene after a six-year hiatus following her acclaimed debut, Panza de burro.
The story is an introspective look at identity and environment, focusing on 16-year-old Cathaysa and her father, known as "El Tiznado." Through their lives, Abreu explores the struggle between the desire for independence and the weight of a social background defined by hardship and family history. Set in northern Tenerife, the novel uses a unique, oral-inspired writing style where the landscape and social structure play a central role in the characters' lives.
This book is a major milestone for Abreu, who was named one of the most prominent voices of her generation by Granta magazine in 2021. It also serves as a test of her ability to build on the international success of her first novel, which was translated into 30 languages, sold over 100,000 copies, and won several prestigious awards, including the Dulce Chacón Narrative Prize.
To celebrate the launch, Abreu will embark on a tour to meet readers. She begins in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on September 10th, followed by Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on the 12th. The tour then moves to mainland Spain, with events in Barcelona on September 22nd and Madrid on the 25th.
In Pajaritos preñados, Abreu continues to examine human relationships, exploring the thin line between tenderness and violence, as well as the vulnerability of those living on the margins of society. The novel serves as an emotional map that avoids easy answers, instead diving deep into the complexity of life choices and how our past shapes who we become.
