The University of La Laguna has opened the exhibition "Andrés Sánchez Robayna, or the Book of the World," dedicated to the memory of the poet, critic, and professor Andrés Sánchez Robayna, showcasing more than 50 years of his work.
The University of La Laguna has opened the exhibition "Andrés Sánchez Robayna, or The Book of the World" to honor the memory of poet, critic, and professor Andrés Sánchez Robayna. The exhibition covers more than 50 years of his work and research and is open to the public until October 30 on the first floor of the university's main library and the humanities library.
Andrés' son, Andrés Sánchez Oviña, was instrumental in organizing the exhibition. Thanks to him, all of Robayna's books are on display, as well as photographs from the family archive.
The library organized the exhibition with funds that Robayna donated to the university during his lifetime, when Antonio Martinón Cejas was the rector. In this way, he wanted his unique library to be preserved and become the property of all. The project was supported by the General Directorate of Culture and Cultural Heritage of the Government of the Canary Islands, as well as the Dean's Office and the Vice-Dean's Office of the Faculty of Philology of the Faculty of Humanities.
Professor Carlos Brito Díaz, who currently teaches at the Faculty of Humanities, together with Fátima Saínz Saínz and Alejandro Rodríguez-Refojo Fernández, oversaw the preparation of the exhibition.
Brito said that the exhibition was originally planned as a surprise for the poet, but after his sudden death in March, it became a posthumous tribute. "The exhibition 'Andrés Sánchez Robayna, or The Book of the World' aims to showcase the author's entire body of work: poet, translator, researcher of Góngora's work, editor, professor, and mentor to younger generations," he noted.
The exhibition showcases the different stages of his career. Among his poetic works, the collection "The Blind Poet," which won the National Critics Award, stands out in particular. He also received the National Translation Prize for his translations and founded the Translation Workshop at the university.
The exhibition also features his research on the Golden Age, Modernism, and the Avant-Garde, as well as his work as editor of anthologies and literary journals, including "Syntax," which is considered one of his most important projects and a platform for communication between the Canary Islands and the world.
His role as a teacher and supervisor of dissertations is also highlighted, as he was a teacher to many generations of students.
Professor Carlos Brito shared a personal story that became special during the opening of the exhibition at the University of La Laguna. He recalled that during the preparation for the exhibition, he received an envelope with Andrés' unique handwriting. Inside was a book of emblems that the poet had specifically saved for him. This gesture, "which came at an inopportune moment," inspired him to say the phrase that was most remembered that day and summed up the entire exhibition: "Andrés has returned again, probably because he never left."
The opening also featured speeches by the Deputy Director of the University Library, María del Carmen Julia Fernández, who thanked all the staff for their participation in organizing the exhibition. And the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Javier Medina López, recalled studying with Robayna in the 1980s: "He was not an ordinary professor who read notes; he aroused curiosity and conveyed a love of literature."
The poet's memory was also honored in other ways. The Faculty of Philology decided to name an auditorium in the Departmental Building after Andrés Sánchez Robayna, and the main library and the humanities library renamed the Heritage Room after Marta Oviña Navarro, Robayna's wife, a wonderful library employee who was loved by all.
This exhibition is not just an exposition, but a collective tribute and a valuable resource for specialists and students. "Andrés Sánchez Robayna, or The Book of the World" reminds us of the importance of his thoughts, which still live on in the pages of his works, in every reader who discovers him, and in every student who was fortunate enough to listen to his lectures, learn, and discover, with his help, a love of literature.
