Ana Sánchez-Gijón makes her feature directorial debut with Kid Vereje, a neorealist drama exploring social marginalization through the life story of Juan Fernando Pérez León, now playing in Tenerife theaters.

Ana Sánchez-Gijón makes her feature film directorial debut with Kid Vereje, a project dedicated to preserving social memory through the life story of Juan Fernando Pérez León. Drawing on her extensive background in production, the Canarian filmmaker moves beyond the traditional documentary style, opting instead for a neorealist narrative.

The film follows Pérez León’s childhood and youth during the final years of the Franco regime—a time defined by economic struggle and family instability. Written by Sánchez-Gijón and Cynthia Alvarado Abarca, the story focuses on the protagonist’s personal journey as he turns to boxing to escape a difficult environment. The film is notable for its stripped-back technical approach and the use of non-professional actors, which lend an authentic, objective look at themes like classism and social marginalization.

The production team includes Alfonso Ruiz, who handled the visual post-production, cinematographer Juan A. Castaño, and composer Christian Solís. Sánchez-Gijón also took on the role of editor, carefully crafting the film’s pacing to maintain narrative tension.

Following its debut in Tegueste, Kid Vereje is now in theaters. It is currently showing at Multicines Tenerife in La Laguna with screenings at 7:15 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Additionally, Espacio Price in Santa Cruz de Tenerife will host a special screening on June 25 at 7:00 p.m., where both the director and the film’s subject will be present for a Q&A. This release marks a significant milestone in Sánchez-Gijón’s career, solidifying her shift into directing after decades of work with La Mirada Producciones.
