Canarian author Ana González Duque has pivoted to the cozy mystery genre with the release of her latest novel, Muerte en el club de lectura, which follows a group of book club members investigating a murder in a quiet Spanish town.

Canarian author Ana González Duque has officially launched her latest book, Muerte en el club de lectura (Duomo Ediciones, 2026), across Spain. Released on September 14th, the novel marks a significant shift in her career; moving away from the romance of her Silver Hill trilogy, she now explores the "cozy mystery" genre.

Cozy mysteries are known for their focus on logical puzzles and deduction, avoiding graphic violence. In this story, González Duque brings the genre to a rural Spanish setting: the town of Montealto, near Valladolid. When an American journalist is found dead in a local bookstore, what initially looks like a medical accident turns into a murder investigation. The story is told through a group of book club members who find themselves caught up in the mystery, revealing the hidden tensions within their quiet community.

This move toward classic suspense reflects a broader trend in the literary world. Readers are increasingly drawn to stories that prioritize psychological depth and character relationships over shock value. González Duque uses this framework to examine the contrast between public personas and private secrets—a classic detective trope that she updates with a modern touch.

Since the book’s release, the author has been touring Spain to promote the work, with events in Madrid, the Canary Islands, and the La Laguna Book Fair. This new direction highlights her versatility as a writer, building on the success of her previous novels like Días de invierno con sabor a jengibre and El olor de la primavera en tu piel. In Muerte en el club de lectura, the investigation is led by Elena, the bookstore owner, and Horacio León, a writer, as they work to uncover the truth hidden behind the town's peaceful facade.
