Albert Español Departs Echeyde for Sabadell as Club Announces Restructuring
Albert Español is departing Echeyde after six transformative years to join Sabadell, prompting a major leadership restructuring at the Tenerife water polo club.
Albert Español is leaving Echeyde, marking the end of a transformative six-year era for Tenerife water polo. During his time with the club, Español helped professionalize the team’s structure while becoming a deeply integrated part of the local community. As reported by El Día, he is now moving to Sabadell, one of Spain’s most historic and prestigious clubs.
Español’s influence went far beyond the scoreboard. Under his leadership, the team established itself in the Division of Honor and reached new heights, including competing in Europe—such as the Challenger Cup semifinals—and becoming a regular fixture in the Copa del Rey. Initially serving as both player and coach, he helped turn the team's fortunes around, scoring 160 goals in 90 official matches.
His departure has triggered a significant restructuring within the club. Marc Prat, who has previously worked with the Barcelona coaching staff and the national team, will take over as head coach of the men’s squad. Additionally, Edu Fernández has been appointed as sporting director, and club icon Nacho Gutiérrez, who recently retired as a player, will take charge of the women’s team, succeeding Enrique Cruz.
For Español, joining Sabadell is a chance to compete at the highest level of Spanish water polo. He leaves Tenerife with a new perspective on life, emphasizing that his time on the island taught him the vital importance of human connections in elite sports. He expressed confidence in the club's future, noting that Gutiérrez’s transition to coaching the women’s team ensures that the ambition and dedication he helped build will continue.
