Albert Español Departs CN Echeyde, Signaling Major Club Restructuring
Albert Español has stepped down as head coach of CN Echeyde, ending a transformative four-year tenure that saw the club reach unprecedented heights in domestic and European water polo.
Albert Español is leaving CN Echeyde, marking a major turning point for water polo in Tenerife. Despite having a contract that ran until 2028, the Catalan coach’s unexpected departure means the club, led by president David Rivas, must now undergo a significant restructuring during a period of transition.
This change follows the retirement of team captain Nacho Gutiérrez—the last remaining player from the 2026 promotion squad. The team faces a total renewal after ending the season with a 15-12 loss to Sant Andreu, which cost them a spot in the upcoming Conference Cup. The club has confirmed that Eduardo Fernández Caldas will step in as sporting director, with an announcement regarding a new head coach expected soon.
Español’s impact on the club goes beyond just his recent results. Since joining in the 2020/21 season, he served as both a player and a strategist, helping the club establish itself in the top national division. His performance was impressive; he was the top scorer in the División de Honor during his first year with 53 goals, finishing his tenure with 160 goals in 90 matches. His background at elite European clubs like Olympiacos and Atlétic-Barceloneta, combined with his Olympic experience, helped raise professional standards across the organization.
Under his leadership, Echeyde enjoyed the most successful era in its history. The team became a regular fixture in the top half of the league table, reached sixth place in the domestic standings, and became a consistent presence in the Copa del Rey. Español also helped the club gain international recognition through appearances in the Eurocup and the Challenger Cup—where the team reached the semifinals—as well as a victory in the Nordic League. His departure ends a successful four-year chapter and presents a significant challenge for the club as it looks to maintain its place among the elite of European water polo.
