Airlines Boost Canary Islands Capacity for Pope’s June Visit
Vueling and Iberia Express are significantly increasing flight capacity to Tenerife and Gran Canaria by adding over 87,000 seats to accommodate the surge in visitors for the Pope’s visit on June 11 and 12.
The Pope’s upcoming visit to the Canary Islands on June 11 and 12 has prompted a major boost in air travel capacity to the archipelago. To manage the expected surge in visitors, Vueling has launched a contingency plan, adding 86,120 extra seats on flights to Tenerife and Gran Canaria between June 8 and 14.
For Tenerife, the airline is adding 48,840 seats on routes from Malaga, Alicante, Barcelona, Bilbao, Paris-Orly, A Coruña, Santiago de Compostela, Seville, and Valencia. Gran Canaria will see an additional 37,280 seats, covering flights from Malaga, Alicante, Barcelona, Bilbao, Paris-Orly, Santiago de Compostela, Seville, and Valencia.
Iberia Express is also increasing its capacity, scheduling eight extra flights to provide an additional 1,500 seats to both islands during the papal visit.
Large-scale events like this require airlines to manage their fleets dynamically. Meeting such high demand tests local airport infrastructure and highlights how vital air connectivity is for mass travel. Close coordination between airlines and airport managers remains essential to keeping air traffic moving smoothly when passenger numbers far exceed typical seasonal levels.
