AirBaltic is establishing a new seasonal base at Tenerife South Airport, deploying an Airbus A220-300 to launch direct flights from Slovenia, Belgium, and Lithuania to boost the island's tourism connectivity.

Tenerife is boosting its tourism strategy with the arrival of a new seasonal base for airBaltic at Tenerife South Airport. From October through April, the Latvian airline will station an Airbus A220-300 on the island to launch and expand direct flight routes.

This move strengthens the airline’s presence in the Canary Islands and opens new travel links to three European markets: Slovenia, Belgium, and Lithuania. The schedule includes two weekly flights from Ljubljana, two from Liège, and a new connection from Palanga.

The Tenerife Island Council views this as a key step in diversifying its tourism market. By moving beyond traditional visitor sources, the island hopes to attract travelers interested in local culture and gastronomy. Officials emphasize that better flight connectivity is essential for the island’s economic growth, especially following a 4.8% rise in Belgian tourists last year.

AirBaltic, which operates one of Europe’s youngest fleets, says the new base will help them better manage their leisure network. Company executive Mantas Vrubliauskas explained that having a permanent aircraft on the island will make it easier for travelers from Central and Northern Europe to reach the Canary Islands during the winter months.

As airlines look to maximize the efficiency of their modern fleets, Tenerife is becoming a central hub for airBaltic. By connecting the Baltic states and Central Europe to the Canary Islands, the airline is further integrating the region into its global network of over 80 destinations.
