Air Canada Launches Direct Flights Connecting Tenerife to Toronto and Montreal
Air Canada is launching new seasonal direct flights from Toronto and Montreal to Tenerife South Airport starting in late October to boost tourism and strengthen business ties between Canada and the Canary Islands.
Air travel to the Canary Islands is set for a major boost this autumn with the launch of new direct flights between Tenerife South Airport and the major Canadian hubs of Toronto and Montreal. Air Canada will operate these seasonal routes from late October through April, a move that marks a significant step in the Tenerife Island Council’s long-term goal to diversify its tourism market.
This initiative is designed to do more than just meet vacation demand; it aims to establish the island as a key business and logistics center in the Atlantic. Starting October 25, there will be two weekly flights to Toronto, followed by a weekly flight to Montreal beginning October 31. The airline will use the modern Airbus A321XLR for these routes, offering 182 seats—including lie-flat business class options—to ensure passenger comfort on the long-haul journey.
The decision follows a clear rise in interest from North American travelers. Last year, Tenerife welcomed over 38,000 passengers from the U.S. and Canada. The Canadian market has more than doubled since 2019, reaching over 8,000 visitors, while U.S. tourism grew by 5.6% to nearly 30,100 passengers.
Local officials hope this new connection will attract a broader range of visitors, including business travelers, the audiovisual industry, and cruise passengers, moving beyond the traditional sun-and-beach model. Air Canada views the route as a key part of its global expansion, noting that it will be the airline's only non-stop service to the island. By linking Tenerife to major North American cities like New York, Boston, Chicago, Vancouver, and Calgary, the new service is expected to strengthen the island’s professional and academic ties with the region.
