Air Canada has announced its largest intercontinental expansion to date, launching new routes and year-round services that are projected to create 1,500 jobs and contribute $7 billion to the Canadian economy by 2028.

Air Canada has unveiled an ambitious growth plan for 2027, marking a major shift in how the airline connects its transatlantic and transpacific routes. This strategy aims to strengthen the airline’s global footprint while boosting the Canadian economy. The company projects that these changes will contribute $7 billion to Canada’s GDP and create 1,500 new direct jobs by the end of 2028.

A key highlight for the Spanish market is the decision to make the Montreal-Tenerife route a permanent, year-round service rather than a seasonal winter offering. The airline is applying this same "de-seasonalization" strategy to its routes to Lima and Guatemala City, reflecting a broader industry trend of maximizing profitability by keeping flights running throughout the year in markets once considered niche.

The scale of this expansion is significant: Air Canada will operate over 125 international routes, offering 169,000 seats per week to more than 85 destinations. This represents an 8% increase in capacity compared to the summer of 2026.

The airline’s network will grow across several hubs:

  • Toronto: New service to Oslo, Shannon, and Nice, along with daily flights to London-Heathrow and increased service to Shanghai.
  • Vancouver: New year-round flights to Guangzhou.
  • Montreal: New connections to Basel and Dubrovnik.

Mark Galardo, Air Canada’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, described this as the largest intercontinental expansion in the company’s history. With these moves, Air Canada is solidifying its status as the North American airline with the second-largest global reach, ensuring it remains competitive in an increasingly demanding market.
