Spain’s meteorological agency has issued a warning for an unseasonably hot spell in the Canary Islands, with temperatures expected to exceed 30°C by this weekend.

Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has warned of an unusually hot spell for mid-April, with temperatures set to climb significantly across the Canary Islands starting this Friday. As a stable weather system settles over the country, thermometers in parts of the islands are expected to exceed 30°C.

The current week began with trade winds and rough seas in the Canary Islands, but conditions are set to stabilize. Aemet spokesperson Rubén del Campo explained that as winds ease on Wednesday, a warmer air mass will move in. Combined with clearer skies, this will lead to a sharp rise in temperatures.

By the weekend, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria are forecast to reach between 27°C and 28°C. However, the heat will be more intense in mid-altitude and southern areas, where temperatures could top 30°C—a notable anomaly for this time of year.

This early arrival of summer-like weather is being closely monitored by experts due to its potential impact on the environment and water supplies. With clear skies and no significant rain expected across the country, the islands are set for conditions more typical of late spring or early summer.
