Spain's State Meteorological Agency has issued yellow alerts across the Canary Islands for a combination of intense heat, strong winds reaching 90 km/h, and hazardous maritime conditions.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued yellow weather alerts for the Canary Islands this Monday, warning of unstable conditions and a spike in temperatures. The archipelago faces a mix of strong winds, rough seas, and intense heat that will impact the islands in different ways.

Strong winds are a major concern today. Alerts begin at 3:00 a.m. in Lanzarote, while Gran Canaria and La Gomera will be under warning from noon. In these areas, gusts are expected to reach 70 km/h, with some local peaks potentially hitting 90 km/h. Maritime conditions will also deteriorate; from 10:00 p.m., the channel between Tenerife and Gran Canaria, as well as the entire coastline of El Hierro, will face strong northeasterly winds of force 7.

Gran Canaria is the focal point for the heatwave. A yellow alert is in place from 11:00 a.m., with temperatures expected to reach 35 ºC, and up to 37 ºC in the Tejeda basin and southern mid-altitude areas. Tenerife will also see a rise in temperatures, with mid-to-high altitude areas reaching between 30 ºC and 32 ºC, while coastal temperatures remain steady.

In Tenerife, haze is expected at higher altitudes during the second half of the day. The north of the island will see cloudy intervals early on, clearing by midday, while the rest of the island will remain mostly clear with a slight chance of light rain on the peaks. Moderate trade winds will persist, becoming stronger in the southeast and northwest. Residents are advised to exercise caution due to these rapidly changing weather conditions.
