Aemet Issues Yellow Weather Alert for Rough Seas in Canary Islands
The State Meteorological Agency has issued a yellow weather alert for coastal hazards across Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and El Hierro on June 8 due to strong trade winds and rough sea conditions.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a yellow weather alert for Monday, June 8, due to rough sea conditions across much of the Canary Islands. The warning for coastal hazards begins at 6:00 p.m. and will primarily affect Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and El Hierro.
The alert is driven by strong northeast trade winds, which are expected to reach speeds of 50 to 61 kilometers per hour—force 7 on the Beaufort scale. These winds will be strongest in the channels between the islands and along their southeast and northwest slopes, where gusts could become particularly intense by the evening.
While this wind pattern is typical for the region, the islands' geography will likely accelerate the airflow. In the north, expect persistent cloud cover below 1,000 meters, with a slight chance of light rain early in the day.
Temperatures will remain stable. In Tenerife, highs will reach between 20 and 27 degrees, with warmer conditions in higher areas. Elsewhere, La Gomera will see temperatures between 21 and 25 degrees, and La Palma between 19 and 23 degrees. Valverde, in El Hierro, will be cooler, ranging from 13 to 18 degrees. Skies are expected to clear across most of the archipelago by the afternoon, leading to better visibility.
