Aemet Issues Wind Warnings Across Canary Islands for Thursday
Spain's State Meteorological Agency has issued wind warnings across the Canary Islands for Thursday, August 20, as strong gusts are expected to impact most of the archipelago.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has warned of windy conditions across the Canary Islands this Thursday, August 20. Gusts are expected to intensify throughout the afternoon, particularly affecting the eastern sides and other key areas of the archipelago.
In Tenerife, the weather will vary by region. The north will remain mostly cloudy with a slight chance of light rain early and late in the day, while the rest of the island will see clear skies, aside from some cloud cover inland and in the south. Temperatures will stay steady, though there will be a moderate drop in the high peaks and a slight cooling in the northern mid-altitudes. In the capital, Santa Cruz, temperatures will range between 25°C and 31°C.
Strong winds are expected in Tenerife’s metropolitan area, as well as its eastern and western regions. Aemet has also issued warnings for the other islands: Gran Canaria, La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro will see stronger northeasterly winds, with particularly powerful gusts expected in areas like El Pinar and the northwest and southeast corners of the islands. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura will experience moderate northerly winds, which are set to pick up in inland Lanzarote by the end of the day.
Maximum temperatures across the islands will reflect the region's diverse climate: Arrecife and San Sebastián de La Gomera will reach 30°C, Santa Cruz de La Palma 29°C, Puerto del Rosario and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria 28°C, and Valverde 22°C. Aemet advises caution, as locally strong gusts are expected to impact daily activities across much of the region throughout the day.
