Aemet Issues Wind Warning for Canary Islands as Unsettled Weather Persists
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a new alert for strong winds across the Canary Islands, with gusts expected to reach up to 80 km/h starting Thursday.
Unsettled weather is set to continue across the Canary Islands over the coming days, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). As the current yellow warning for coastal conditions in the western islands and Gran Canaria expires, a new alert for strong winds will take its place.
This new alert begins at midnight on Thursday for Gran Canaria and the more mountainous islands, extending to Lanzarote from 6:00 a.m. The region will experience northeasterly winds with gusts generally reaching 70 km/h, though these could exceed 80 km/h in higher areas and on southeastern slopes.
Wednesday will act as a transition day. The northern parts of the islands will see cloud cover below 1,000 meters, with a slight chance of light, scattered rain in the northeast. The rest of the region will remain clear. While temperatures will drop slightly inland, the southern coast of the metropolitan area will stay warm, with highs potentially reaching 30°C.
Wednesday’s winds will already hint at the coming conditions, with moderate to strong gusts expected in the southeast, the far northwest, and the mid-altitudes of Anaga. Aemet forecasts moderate northeasterly winds across the region, particularly affecting inland Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, as well as the northwestern and southeastern slopes of the mountainous islands. Residents in La Gomera and Gran Canaria should exercise extra caution, as there is a high probability of very strong wind gusts.
