AEMET Issues Weather Alerts for Canary Islands Over Strong Winds and Rough Seas
Spain's State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued weather alerts for the Canary Islands as strong northeasterly winds and rough seas are expected to impact travel and infrastructure through Thursday.
The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued weather alerts for the Canary Islands due to strong northeasterly winds and rough seas. These conditions are expected to last from Tuesday afternoon through Thursday, highlighting how the islands' infrastructure and travel can be affected by trade winds, particularly at sea and in higher areas.
The low-risk warnings begin at 4:00 PM on Tuesday. From then until early Wednesday morning, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro will face difficult coastal conditions. Winds are expected to reach force 7, with speeds between 50 and 61 km/h, mainly impacting the southern, eastern, and western coasts, as well as the channels between the islands.
On Thursday, June 4, the focus will shift to strong wind gusts on land. Forecasters expect speeds of 70 km/h, with peaks potentially exceeding 80 km/h in exposed areas. This will primarily affect the mountain peaks and southeastern slopes of the islands, as well as parts of northwestern La Palma, La Gomera, and Gran Canaria, and the western tips of Tenerife and El Hierro. Lanzarote will also be under alert starting at 6:00 AM on Thursday, with the strongest winds expected in the south.
Authorities are urging the public to take precautions. The islands' rugged terrain can cause winds to accelerate, making driving dangerous for motorcycles and high-profile vehicles. Residents should secure loose items on balconies and rooftops, and avoid nautical activities, coastal promenades, and viewpoints during the worst of the weather.
This situation serves as a reminder to stay updated on weather forecasts, as the combination of rough seas and strong winds is a common risk in the region. While the alerts are classified as low-risk, officials emphasize that staying informed and adjusting daily plans is essential to staying safe.
