Aemet Issues Warning for Strong Winds and Rough Seas in Canary Islands

The State Meteorological Agency has issued a warning for strong trade winds and rough seas across the Canary Islands this Thursday, alongside cloudy skies and light rain in northern regions.

This Thursday, the Canary Islands will see strong trade winds, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). These winds are expected to pick up throughout the day, with particularly strong gusts hitting the northwest and southeast of Tenerife, as well as exposed areas across all the islands, especially by the evening.

The weather will vary depending on the location. The northern slopes of the higher islands—Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro—can expect cloudy skies and a good chance of light rain, particularly at mid-altitudes. Other areas will see more sunshine. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura will start the day cloudy, but skies should clear as the day goes on, with little chance of rain.

Temperatures will remain steady. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, highs will reach between 17 and 22 degrees, while Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will see temperatures between 18 and 21 degrees. The eastern islands will range from 16 to 22 degrees. At the highest peaks of Mount Teide, temperatures may drop low enough for light frost early in the morning.

Conditions at sea will be rough due to the winds, which will reach force 4 to 5, occasionally hitting force 6. A northerly swell will bring waves of up to two meters, so those planning coastal or boating activities should exercise caution.
