Aemet Forecasts Mild Weather Shift and Strengthening Trade Winds in Canary Islands

The Canary Islands will experience a mild shift in weather this Saturday as strengthening trade winds bring cooler temperatures and potential light showers to higher altitudes.

The stable weather seen in the Canary Islands over the last few days will shift slightly this Saturday, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). While the change will be mild, it is driven by the trade winds, which continue to shape the islands' temperatures and cloud patterns.

In Tenerife, expect a mix of sun and clouds. Light, isolated showers are possible, mainly in mid-altitude areas. Temperatures will range between 21°C and 29°C, with daytime highs expected to drop slightly, particularly in the north. Winds will blow from the northeast, hitting the eastern and far northwestern parts of the island hardest, while the west will see lighter, local breezes.

The rest of the archipelago will see similar conditions with some local variations. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura will be mostly clear with some morning cloud cover, while the higher islands will see clouds build up during the day. Gran Canaria will start cloudy before clearing up, and the western islands may experience light rain overnight in mid-altitude areas due to increased humidity.

There are no severe weather warnings for the islands. However, the northeast wind is expected to strengthen by the afternoon. These persistent winds are a key feature of the Canarian climate; they act as a natural air conditioner and create the famous "sea of clouds" on the northern slopes—a phenomenon that remains vital for local agriculture and water management.
