Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga has confirmed he will seek an eleventh consecutive term in 2027, continuing a nearly 40-year leadership tenure following his recovery from a recent health crisis.

José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga is a standout example of political longevity in Spain. The mayor of Adeje has confirmed he will run for an eleventh consecutive term in the 2027 elections, a decision made shortly after he recovered from a serious heart condition last March. This announcement settles any questions about his future at the Tenerife town hall and highlights the success of a leadership style that has defined the municipality for nearly 40 years.

After undergoing bypass surgery, the 79-year-old politician took time to re-evaluate his priorities. Rodríguez Fraga, who first took office in 1987 after a career in teaching, is now returning to public life with a focus on modernizing housing, strengthening social cohesion, and upgrading the technology used in the local tourism industry. His long-standing electoral success is rare in Spanish politics.

The case of Adeje is unique. While his first term required coalition agreements, the PSOE has won consecutive absolute majorities under his leadership, even reaching 75% of the vote in 2003. This stability has driven significant urban and economic growth, though it has also sparked ongoing debates about the impact of such long-term leadership and the effects of development on the coastline.

Rodríguez Fraga’s tenure is part of a broader trend of long-serving mayors in the Canary Islands; he is currently the second longest-serving mayor in the region. Having secured 54% of the vote in 2023, he is now preparing for a new term focused on sustainability and social welfare for a population that has grown to over 50,000. He says that overcoming his recent health crisis has only strengthened his resolve to continue the work that has been the backbone of local politics in southern Tenerife for the past 39 years.
