Adeje Marks 182nd Anniversary of Civil Guard with Tribute to Fallen Officers
Adeje celebrated the 182nd anniversary of the Civil Guard with a ceremony honoring the force's long-standing service, its response to migration and crime, and the sacrifice of officers killed in the line of duty.
Adeje recently marked the 182nd anniversary of the Civil Guard, an event that highlighted the vital role the force plays in the Canary Islands. Nearly 400 people gathered at the municipal auditorium, led by Government Delegate Anselmo Pestana, to discuss the challenges the force faces today, particularly regarding migration and organized crime.
The ceremony, attended by Chief General Juan Hernández Mosquera and acting mayor Mercedes Vargas, celebrated the Civil Guard’s 90-year history in the municipality. During his speech, General Mosquera paid a somber tribute to the 30 officers who lost their lives in the line of duty over the past year. He specifically honored an officer who died at the port of Granadilla and two others recently killed in Huelva while fighting drug trafficking.
The event also recognized outstanding service and cooperation. The El Hierro Main Post received special praise for its work during the migration crisis, earning four decorations and nineteen commendations for its staff. Additionally, three officers were awarded the Cross of Military Merit, and a rural guard and a Granadilla de Abona police officer were honored for their collaboration with the force.
The day concluded with an exchange of gifts between the City Council and the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Command, symbolizing the strong ties between the institution and the community. To further connect with the public, the Civil Guard hosted an exhibition in the Plaza de España, where residents could learn about the various specialized units that have protected the islands since the force was founded in 1844.
