Adeje Launches Summer Coastal Safety Campaign to Enhance Tourist Protection

The Adeje City Council has launched a new summer safety campaign in Tenerife titled "Knowing the sea is safety." Given the high number of tourists visiting the area, the initiative aims to improve coastal risk management and prioritize public safety.

The program includes specialized training for the Local Police Beach Unit, led by rescue expert Eduardo Blasco. Because local officers are often the first to arrive at an emergency, they have been trained in essential water rescue maneuvers. This includes techniques for towing victims and safely extracting those with potential spinal or multiple injuries—skills that are vital for public safety in swimming areas.

The campaign is a collaborative effort involving the Departments for the Elderly and the Beach Unit. It also includes coordination with the British consulate to better support the area's large UK visitor population, alongside a multilingual information strategy featuring brochures and social media updates.

Beyond technical training, officers are working directly on the beach to educate the public. They are providing guidance on sun protection and how to read sea conditions, while stressing the importance of respecting flag warnings, never swimming alone, and keeping a close eye on children and the elderly. The council is also urging visitors to avoid risky behavior, such as taking photos near breakwaters or surf zones, and to stay within designated areas for water sports.

Looking ahead to September, the City Council plans to launch a second phase of the campaign. This will focus on building a stronger culture of safety among local residents and younger people, ensuring that coastal management continues to balance proactive education with the operational readiness of municipal staff.
