Adeje Launches #RespectOnWheels Campaign to Regulate Electric Scooters
The Adeje local council has launched the #RespectOnWheels campaign to educate electric scooter riders on traffic regulations, safety standards, and responsible parking to ensure public space order.
As electric scooters become a common sight in Adeje, the local council is launching a new campaign, #RespectOnWheels (#RespetoSobreRuedas), to help residents and visitors understand the rules of the road. With these vehicles becoming a popular transport alternative, the city aims to reduce conflicts and ensure public spaces remain safe for everyone.
Mercedes Vargas, head of the Department of Security, stresses that electric scooters are not just toys; they are vehicles, and riders have the same legal responsibilities as any other driver. The campaign focuses on three key rules: scooters must never be ridden on sidewalks, they must not exceed 25 kilometers per hour, and riders are required to have insurance.
The council is also emphasizing responsible parking, reminding users to leave their scooters in places that do not block pedestrian paths. To make these rules easy to follow, the city has launched a dedicated website featuring a clear guide to local ordinances and answers to frequently asked questions.
This educational campaign will use social media videos and graphics to help keep pedestrians safe and help riders avoid fines. The initiative aligns with national guidelines from the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT), which now require scooters to have a circulation certificate to prove they meet safety standards. Through these efforts, Adeje hopes to balance sustainable travel with a safer, more orderly environment for everyone.
