Adeje Launches Major Residential Expansion to Tackle Housing Shortage
The municipality of Adeje has launched two major residential projects spanning over 142,000 square meters to address Tenerife’s housing shortage by creating space for nearly 2,800 new residents.
Adeje is set for a major residential expansion as the municipality begins work on two key development areas: El Calvario and Adeje 2020. Spanning a total of 142,441 square meters, these projects aim to address Tenerife’s housing shortage by creating space for nearly 2,800 new residents.
Located between the historic Casa Fuerte and the Costa Adeje tourist hub, these developments are strictly for residential use, not tourism.
The El Calvario sector covers 53,636 square meters and will be managed by a board of local landowners. Following the 2008 General Urban Development Plan, this area will feature a mix of houses and apartments, along with local shops, but will not include subsidized housing.
The Adeje 2020 sector, covering 88,805 square meters, is being managed directly by the City Council due to the high number of different property owners involved. This project has a strong social focus, with 40% of the new homes designated as subsidized housing. The environmental plans for this site are currently open for public review for the next 45 working days.
Beyond adding new homes, these projects aim to improve local services and connectivity. Because developable land is so scarce on the island, these sites are considered strategically important. Construction is expected to begin within the next two to four years.
These developments are part of a broader effort to balance Adeje’s growth with environmental needs, including the creation of a 35,000-square-meter forest. These initiatives reinforce Adeje’s position as one of the most active areas for new housing in the Canary Islands.
