Adeje Launches €2.5 Million Upgrade to Expand Key Tenerife Arterial Road
Adeje has launched a €2.5 million, 16-month infrastructure project to double the capacity of Avenida Tinerfe El Grande and modernize its surrounding pedestrian and utility services to alleviate chronic traffic congestion.
Adeje is moving forward with a major upgrade to Avenida Tinerfe El Grande, a key road in the south of Tenerife. To address ongoing traffic congestion caused by the area’s rapid growth, the City Council has updated its plans to remodel this vital route.
The project, costing over 2.5 million euros, will double the road’s capacity by expanding it from one lane to two lanes in each direction. This 16-month project, split into two phases, aims to modernize infrastructure that has struggled to keep up with the region's population. Data from the Cabildo de Tenerife shows that 16,000 vehicles use the road daily, including a high volume of heavy and public transport, making these improvements essential.
Beyond widening the road, the project will redesign the surrounding space. Plans include a four-meter median, a 3.5-meter bike lane, and wider sidewalks to improve pedestrian access. The work also covers upgrades to basic services, including drainage, sanitation, and new LED street lighting.
Because the road connects to critical points like the TF-1 highway and the Fañabé-La Caleta road, the City Council has created a detailed traffic management plan to minimize disruption. Construction will be carried out in sections, and the most disruptive work near highway interchanges will be scheduled for nighttime. This approach aims to improve traffic flow while keeping the area—which houses key schools, sports facilities, and administrative offices—accessible to the public.
