Adeje Approves €10 Million Overhaul of Public Lighting and Electrical Infrastructure

Adeje City Council has approved a major overhaul of its public lighting and electrical maintenance network. The project will invest nearly 10 million euros over the next two years, with the option to extend the contract for another two. This move marks a significant shift toward modernizing the municipality’s infrastructure and improving how essential services are managed.

A key part of the strategy is improving energy efficiency by replacing outdated sodium-vapor streetlights with modern LED technology. This transition will begin with a 600,000-euro investment in the first year, with costs gradually increasing over the four-year period. This initiative supports sustainability goals and aligns with European guidelines to reduce carbon footprints and fossil fuel reliance.

The contract also introduces 24/7 service, 365 days a year. A dedicated team—including officers, laborers, and administrative staff—will work in rotating shifts to ensure the council can respond quickly to any issues. Residents will be able to report breakdowns directly through new communication channels, such as phone or instant messaging.

The agreement covers a vast network, including nearly 12,000 light points, 163 control panels, 79 municipal buildings, and 7 transformer centers, with the flexibility to add up to 700 more lights. For the first time, the contract also includes the maintenance of solar power installations and generators, as well as enhanced technical support for local events and improved Christmas lighting.

Councilor Epifanio Díaz Hernández noted that this plan goes beyond routine maintenance. It provides the municipality with a stronger ability to handle emergencies and support the Local Police during severe weather. By professionalizing the management of its critical infrastructure, Adeje aims to combine energy efficiency with a more responsive service for its neighborhoods and tourist areas.
