Cristino de Vera, a renowned Canary Islands painter known for his deeply spiritual and symbolic style, has died at the age of 94.

Cristino de Vera, a renowned painter and one of the most important artists from the Canary Islands, has died at the age of 94. Born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on December 15, 1931, his work significantly shaped contemporary painting in the archipelago. He was considered an essential figure for his unique, deeply spiritual, and symbolic style.

De Vera once described his home island as "a place where nature, things, life itself was a balance of light and shadows, life and death, peace and terror, joy and melancholy." This perspective influenced many of his works, including Figura y dos coronas de flores (2003), which is a key example of his artistic vision.

He studied at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts and finished his training in Madrid at Daniel Vázquez Díaz's workshop, where he developed his unique artistic style. His first group exhibition was in 1952 at Galería Xagra, followed soon after by his first solo show at Galería Estilo. In 1971, he had his first retrospective exhibition in the Canary Islands, organized by Caja General de Ahorros de Canarias. This institution later helped establish the Fundación Cristino de Vera – Espacio Cultural CajaCanarias, which works to preserve and share his art in Tenerife.

Throughout his career, Cristino de Vera received some of Spain's most significant cultural awards. These include the Gold Medal of the Canary Islands (1996), the National Plastic Arts Award (1998), the Gold Medal for Fine Arts (2002), and the Canary Islands Award for Fine Arts and Interpretation (2005). In 2019, the DIARIO DE AVISOS Foundation gave him the Premio Taburiente, recognizing his contributions to the art and culture of the Canary Islands.

In January 2025, Rosa Dávila, president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, presented him with the Gran Distinción de Nivaria at a ceremony in Madrid's Canary Islands Office. During the event, Dávila highlighted his career, stating it "has brought the name of Tenerife to the highest levels of contemporary art." The island's governing body had unanimously approved this award.

Cristino de Vera's passing marks the loss of one of the most unique voices in Canarian painting. He was an artist who made light, silence, and spirituality central to his timeless work, which will remain a vital part of the Islands' cultural heritage.
