Tenerife: Protest against Disa wind farms due to threat to nature

Approximately 200 protesters in Güímar opposed the construction of wind power plants by the company Disa, fearing for the preservation of nature and the interests of local communities.

Yesterday, about 200 people gathered under the Guimar City Hall to protect the southeastern part of Tenerife. The protest was called by the Ecomarca platform.

People opposed the construction of the Pilón I and Pilón II wind power plants, which Disa wants to build. They are also concerned about the possible construction of another station – Pilón III – in the La Medida and Pájara areas.

During the rally, Ecomarca representatives stated that they do not want to be forced into large industrial projects that destroy nature and benefit only a few.

Ecomarca accuses Disa of promoting an energy model that is speculative, opaque and harmful to local communities and natural areas.

The protesters called for a fair and open transition to renewable energy. They believe that solar panels should be installed on roofs, local energy cooperatives should be created, and old power plants should be modernized. Instead, they say, companies want to occupy agricultural land and protected areas with new facilities.

Representatives of the municipality plan to meet with Disa after the Socorro holidays to learn more about the project. They want to get a report on the project, written in simple and clear language.

The goal is to convey this information to local residents and, if necessary, prepare new objections to the construction.

Ecomarca emphasizes that they are not against renewable energy, but demand that the planning of such projects take into account the interests of all citizens and take place with their participation. They do not want the landscape, agriculture and local identity to be sacrificed for private enrichment.
