The past year has been a busy one for Canary Islands actress Aïda Ballmann. She has gained international attention and explored new creative avenues, appearing in five film and television projects and also developing her skills as a creator by making two new short films.
Her projects include the British series Frauds and the Spanish series Malnombre. She also starred in three feature films: A una isla de ti, directed by Alexis Morante; The End of It, an international co-production by María Martínez Bayona; and Un hombre tras un rifle, a Canary Islands western marking Marco Oliva's debut as a director.
Frauds is a British series starring Suranne Jones (Gentleman Jack) and Jodie Whittaker (Doctor Who). This thriller, with hints of black comedy, explores themes of deception, friendship, and survival. Set to premiere on ITVX and BBC, it marks a significant step in the international career of the actress, who was born on the island of El Hierro.
Ballmann also shines in Malnombre, a Spanish vampire series created by Alfonso Cortés-Cavanillas, who also directs several episodes. Produced by La Caña Sisters, Malnombre blends thriller, social drama, and supernatural horror. Aïda Ballmann plays Pilar, a key character, alongside actors like Macarena Gómez, Ruth Díaz, Aitor Luna, and Jorge Basanta. Filmed in the Canary Islands and Madrid, it is expected to premiere in January.
A una isla de ti is a romantic comedy that celebrates love, diversity, and the beauty of the Canary Islands. Aïda Ballmann plays Lara in this film, directed by Alexis Morante and produced by Morena Films. The cast also includes Toni Acosta, Freddie Dennis, and Jaime Zataráin.
Also filmed in the Canary Islands, Ballmann appears in The End of It, which stars Rebecca Hall (Vicky Cristina Barcelona). This international co-production, directed by María Martínez Bayona, takes a philosophical and emotional look at life and death in a future where aging can be cured.
Un hombre tras un rifle is a western from Marco Oliva where Ballmann plays two strong and resilient characters, Matilda and Luisa. Filmed in natural settings, it showcases the Canary Islands landscape as a perfect setting for films and adds a fresh perspective to Spanish genre cinema.
Beyond acting, Ballmann has also explored her creative side with two short films, Satisfayer and Un infierno paradisíaco. She co-wrote, co-directed, and co-starred in them with Andalusian actress Carmen Corchs. These situational comedies use irony to show the discomfort of two women who seem to have everything but only focus on the negatives in their lives.
In addition to her acting work, Aïda Ballmann served on the jury for the Nordeste Film Festival and took part in the DocuRock Festival. These roles highlight her dedication to promoting cinema from the Canary Islands and supporting independent filmmaking.
