Actress Aïda Ballmann and filmmaker Arima León have been appointed to lead the Canary Islands branch of the Association of Women Filmmakers and Audiovisual Media (CIMA) to advance gender parity and address job instability in the regional film industry.

Efforts to decentralize equality policies in Spain’s cultural sector have taken a major step forward with the appointment of actress Aïda Ballmann as a delegate for the Association of Women Filmmakers and Audiovisual Media (CIMA) in the Canary Islands. Alongside filmmaker Arima León, the El Hierro-born actress will lead the regional branch, helping to tailor parity goals to the unique needs of the local film industry.

This move addresses a long-standing issue in the Spanish audiovisual sector, where a gender gap remains in both leadership roles and job security. The establishment of these regional delegations is part of a wider effort by professional groups to ensure that productions funded by public money follow equality plans and quotas. This is essential for ensuring that films accurately reflect the country’s diverse population.

For Ballmann, this role is a natural extension of her activism, which she balances with a busy acting career, including her recent performance in Alexis Morante’s feature film A una isla de ti. She has stated that her priority will be to tackle the job instability that affects many professionals, while pushing for more women to be represented in every technical and creative department, from cinematography to editing.

The importance of this appointment is highlighted by Ballmann’s current role on the CIMA jury at the 25th Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival. Her work at the festival, which concludes this Sunday, reflects CIMA’s commitment to evaluating films through a gender-conscious lens—a mission that will be further strengthened by her new leadership role in the islands.
