In the Canary Islands, the Day of the Dead will be celebrated with the "Finados" festival.
The week-long "Finados" festival, dedicated to the Canarian traditions of the Day of the Dead, will be held in La Orotava in the Canary Islands, with tours, lectures, and performances.
The "Finados" festival will be held in the town of La Orotava in the Canary Islands from October 25 to 31. This is an initiative to commemorate the old Canarian traditions associated with the Day of the Dead. There will be various interesting events: excursions, theatrical readings, lectures and performances by folklore groups. All of this is free and open to everyone.
For a week, the town will become a place to remember the past and immerse oneself in the culture and ancient customs of the islands.
It will all start with the excursion "La Orotava in Bones and Soul" (October 25 and 28). It will tell about the symbolism of death in art and religion.
On October 29, the book "Los finados. El día de los muertos" by Ana Alonso and Elena Sicilia will be presented. This will be followed by a tour of the local cemetery.
On October 30, researcher Paula Barrero Russo will give a lecture on infant mortality in the 18th and 19th centuries. And on October 31, on the eve of All Saints' Day, the Oroval folk group will perform a musical program "Rezos y plegarias" in the San Francisco district.
To attend the events, you must pre-register at the municipality or write to the cultural heritage department by e-mail. The number of places is limited.
The mayor of the town, Francisco Linares, says that such events help to remember folk customs and respect those who lived before us.
The heritage advisor, Delia Escobar, adds that the Day of the Dead is a day of remembrance, traditions and identity, and it is important for the younger generation to understand its cultural value.
Thus, La Orotava shows how important it is to preserve Canarian traditions, offering a special way to celebrate the eve of All Saints' Day - through culture and reflection.
