The implementation of the El Mojón development plan, approved in 1996, has begun in the Canary Islands with the signing of the partial acceptance of the improvement works.
Important news from the Canary Islands: the El Mojón development plan, approved back in 1996, is finally starting to come to life! The partial acceptance act for the improvement works has been signed – a big step forward.
The ceremony took place in the municipality of Arona. It was attended by the mayor of the city, Fátima Lemes, the head of development, Javier Baute, and the head of the El Mojón Compensation Board, Miguel Villarroya.
The Mayor of Arona called it a "historic event" and said she was very happy to be the mayor signing such an important document.
According to her, the El Mojón plan is no longer just a project, but a reality that will change the city. She believes that this will help Arona become a leader in the Canary Islands.
The mayor also emphasized the importance of making the city convenient for everyone: both for those who drive cars and for pedestrians. She is confident that in a few years everyone will remember this day.
Javier Baute, who is in charge of development, mentioned Manolo Barrios, calling him the "father of the development plan." He said that this is a big project that requires the efforts of many people. He also added that the implementation of the plan will have a positive impact on the economy, especially on small and medium-sized businesses.
The advisor warned that not everything will be simple and problems may arise, especially with transport. But he assured that they are already working on solving these issues.
He also announced that after the signing of the act, applications for building permits will begin to be considered. And soon it will be possible to start building!
Miguel Villarroya, head of the El Mojón Compensation Board, emphasized that the authorities and the private sector can do a lot for the city together. He thanked everyone for their hard work over the years and noted that this plan is not just a random idea.
He said that the plan envisages the construction of 245,000 square meters of roads, which should improve transport links and access to the port.
El Mojón is a large area that is planned to be built in the upper part of Los Cristianos and in the lower part of Chayofa, near the Southern Hospital. It will occupy 972,000 square meters. There will be many homes and shops (60% of the territory for housing, 40% for tourism). In total, it will be able to accommodate about 9,000 people. There will also be 390,000 square meters of land owned by the state, and 150,000 square meters for various facilities.
Two parks of 26,000 square meters each are planned on state land, as well as the construction of schools (11,000 sq.m), sports facilities (15,000 sq.m) and cultural facilities (17,000 sq.m).
In order for the project to move forward, on February 19, 2024, the municipality of Arona and the Compensation Board signed an agreement. It envisages the construction of roads and sidewalks between the eastern and western parts of the district, as well as the acceptance of improvement works. All this is in accordance with decision No. 6533/2025 of August 1.
