82-Year-Old Hiker Rescued After Fall in Northern Tenerife
Emergency services rescued an 82-year-old hiker who sustained moderate injuries after falling on a trail near the Erjos ponds in northern Tenerife.
The rescue of an 82-year-old hiker near the Erjos ponds in northern Tenerife has once again highlighted the challenges of emergency operations in difficult terrain. According to the Canary Islands’ 1-1-2 emergency service, the operation began at 10:26 a.m. today after reports that the hiker had fallen on a popular trail.
The rescue demonstrated the importance of teamwork between emergency agencies. Because the area was difficult to reach, the Tenerife Fire Consortium had to hike to the man’s location to stabilize him. They then worked closely with the Canary Emergency Service (SUC) to carry the hiker to a safe area, where he received initial medical treatment.
After an assessment at the scene, medics determined the man had sustained moderate injuries. Due to his age, he was taken by ambulance to the Hospital del Norte, where he remains under observation.
Incidents like this show how vulnerable hikers can be on uneven terrain, where the speed and technical skill of rescue teams are vital. As the number of rescues in the islands' natural areas continues to rise, authorities are maintaining specialized protocols to ensure help can reach those in places where standard vehicles cannot go.
