75-Year-Old Tenerife Athlete Wins Three World Master Trail Titles
Seventy-five-year-old Tenerife athlete Tomás González Morales continues to redefine aging in sports after securing three world master trail team titles in the Czech Republic.
Tomás González Morales, an athlete from Tacoronte, Tenerife, is redefining what it means to stay competitive well into one's later years. As reported by El Día, the 75-year-old recently achieved a remarkable milestone by winning three world master trail team titles in Janske Lazne, Czech Republic, between June 26 and 28.
His success is more than just an impressive statistic. Since shifting his focus to high-performance running in 2000, González Morales has built an extraordinary career, completing 419 official races and reaching the podium 215 times. His record includes 136 outright victories, and in 2023, he was honored as a "Canary Legend" by the Tenerife Bluetrail.
His secret lies in smart training. Rather than overexerting himself, he follows a balanced weekly routine: three days of running and two days of strength training. He prioritizes quality over quantity, keeping his workouts under two hours and avoiding overly intense paces. By listening closely to his body, he has managed to stay fit and avoid injury.
Mentally, González Morales remains as disciplined and motivated as ever. He admits that his self-perception changes over time, but he still feels the same pre-race excitement he felt years ago. He credits this emotional drive as the key to his longevity with the Espíritu Triabona Adeje club.
Looking ahead, he plans to continue competing in mountain trail races for the next three years. After that, he intends to shift his focus to track events, with the ultimate goal of competing in the national championships in the 80-plus age category. His journey serves as a powerful example of how to embrace aging while continuing to push for personal excellence.
