Civil Guard and customs officials at Tenerife North Airport seized over 70,000 medications hidden in 20 suitcases, leading to five individuals being investigated for illegal drug trafficking and public health crimes.

Civil Guard officers and customs officials at Tenerife North Airport have seized more than 70,000 medications. The drugs were found hidden in 20 suitcases checked at the airport.

Following the operation, five individuals are under investigation. They include three men (aged 83, 21, and 27) and two women (aged 85 and 55). They are suspected of illegal drug trafficking, a crime against public health, and another crime against Social Security.

The investigation started during routine checks of luggage heading for plane cargo holds. X-ray scans showed several suspicious suitcases, prompting security staff to alert the Civil Guard. Officers then opened and inspected the bags.

Over several days of checks, officers inspected 20 suitcases. These belonged to passengers travelling separately on different flights. Inside, they found over 70,000 medications, all linked to the five people now under investigation.

The drugs were confiscated because they lacked the necessary paperwork for a commercial shipment and did not have approval from the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices.

The Civil Guard reminds everyone about the importance of using medications responsibly and following health regulations. They also warn that selling, transporting, or distributing drugs without proper tracking and official oversight can seriously endanger public health and result in legal penalties.
