The Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is getting ready for its 31st Christmas Concert. It will take place this Thursday, December 25, at 7:30 PM in the Dársena de Los Llanos, in the capital of Tenerife.
Today, Tuesday, at the same time, the general rehearsal begins. During this rehearsal, sound and lighting are checked, and the full musical program is practiced with all the soloists and the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Pablo González.
This year's Puertos de Tenerife Christmas Concert will feature mezzo-soprano Nancy Fabiola Herrera, tenor Juan Antonio Sanabria, and violinist Javier Comesaña as soloists. The Tenerife Symphony Orchestra will perform a range of pieces by composers like Bernstein, Brahms, Bizet, and Sarasate. The program will include music from opera, zarzuela, and classical symphonies, promising a very festive evening.
The concert will be broadcast across Spain on La 2 of Televisión Española and worldwide on TVE's International Channel.
All money raised from ticket sales will go entirely to three charities: Fundación Canaria Pequeño Valiente, Down Tenerife, and Hermanitas de los Ancianos Desamparados. Fundación DISA is also supporting this cause, adding 20,000 euros to the total amount collected.
The 31st Puertos de Tenerife Christmas Concert is sponsored by Tenerife Despierta Emociones, the Government of the Canary Islands, Sociedad de Desarrollo, and Iftsa, with additional support from other public and private organizations.
The concert will open with Glinka's overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila. This will be followed by well-known vocal pieces such as Bizet's Habanera from Carmen, and Maria and the Mambo from West Side Story by Bernstein. The evening will continue with the second movement of Lalo's Symphonie espagnole, and Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Airs).
Brahms' Hungarian Dance No. 5 and Kodály's Dances of Galánta will be performed next, followed by a section of zarzuela music, and then Christmas carols, including "Una sobre el mismo mar." The concert will conclude with Johann Strauss Sr.'s Radetzky March.
