A 3.5-magnitude earthquake struck near the underwater Enmedio volcano between Tenerife and Gran Canaria on Thursday, prompting continued monitoring by the National Geographic Institute.

Seismic activity between Tenerife and Gran Canaria is back in the spotlight after a tremor was detected this Thursday. According to the National Geographic Institute (IGN), the earthquake reached a magnitude of 3.5. While this is considered moderate, initial reports indicate that residents in the area felt the shaking.

The epicenter was located near the Enmedio volcano, an underwater geological structure sitting 30 kilometers deep. First mapped in the mid-1990s, the volcano is a large cone with a base spanning 3.5 kilometers, resting on the seabed at depths of over 2,000 meters. Although its peak is hidden under 1,625 meters of water, the volcano itself rises 730 meters from the seafloor, making it a significant feature of the region's underwater landscape.

This latest event is part of the ongoing seismic activity common to this underwater fault. A larger 4.1-magnitude earthquake occurred in the same area last February, which was felt by residents across several municipalities on both islands. Because the Enmedio volcano is a site of major geological interest, scientists continue to monitor the area closely. The interaction between tectonic plates and latent volcanic activity means that constant surveillance is essential to track these movements.
