3.1-Magnitude Earthquake Recorded Near Enmedio Volcano in Canary Islands
A 3.1-magnitude earthquake struck near the Enmedio volcano between Tenerife and Gran Canaria on Monday, with some residents reporting that the tremor was felt.
The National Geographic Institute (IGN) recorded another earthquake on Monday in the channel between Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The 3.1-magnitude tremor occurred near the Enmedio volcano, an underwater site that geologists monitor closely due to its location.
The earthquake struck at 5:57 p.m. local time at a depth of 27 kilometers. While seismic activity in this area is common and usually goes unnoticed, some residents in the Tenerife municipality of Güímar reported feeling this particular event.
This tremor follows a series of similar moderate earthquakes in the region over the past few months, including a 3.5-magnitude event in April and a 4.1-magnitude quake in February that was felt across both islands.
Geologists consider the Enmedio volcano zone an area of significant scientific interest. While most of these movements are harmless and cause no damage, the IGN continues to monitor the area to track the Earth's crustal activity. These frequent events highlight the Canary Islands' natural geological activity, allowing experts to distinguish between routine background tremors and any unusual activity that might require further investigation.
