The 28th Canary Islands International Environmental Film Festival (FICMEC) kicked off today in Garachico. More than just a film festival, the event aims to spark cultural renewal and raise ecological awareness, reflecting a growing trend of using festivals to encourage direct public action on environmental issues. The event runs in Garachico until Sunday, before moving to Icod de los Vinos from June 4 to 7.
Under the banner "Jaleo en la Plaza," the festival features a dozen free activities. Highlights include a performance of Otto Stragman by the group Abubukaka this Friday at 10:00 p.m. at the Glorieta de San Francisco. Musical performances include the Garachico Musical Group on Saturday at 10:00 p.m. in Garachico, followed by the Vässil Ohn Quartet on June 5 at 10:00 p.m. and the Bernegal company on June 6 at 9:00 p.m. in Icod de los Vinos.
The festival also focuses on education and sustainability through children’s workshops. On Saturday at 12:30 p.m., Alessandro Ferrato will host a session on making recycled instruments titled No tires nada, tócalo primero (Don't throw anything away, play it first). Additionally, storytellers Silvia Torrents and Óscar Tiraida will present Cuentos / Historias extrañas (Tales / Strange Stories) in Garachico this Saturday at 6:30 p.m., with a follow-up performance at the Casa de los Cáceres in Icod de los Vinos on June 6.
Art and science are also central to the program. The CajaCanarias Foundation is presenting Escrito en piedra (Written in Stone), an exhibition exploring indigenous archaeological sites and their connection to Amazigh culture. Other highlights include scientific photography by Brote Award winner Luis Monje, a recycled cardboard installation by Raúl Pérez titled Peces en un mar digital (Fish in a Digital Sea), and upcycled sculptures by Luigi Stinga.
Tickets for film screenings are available via tickety.es. Throughout the weekends, visitors can also browse a sustainable products fair held at the Glorieta de San Francisco in Garachico and the Plaza de la Pila in Icod de los Vinos.
