The 27th annual Verano de Cuento festival begins this Friday at the El Sauzal Theater, celebrating oral traditions with a weekend of performances for both adults and families.

The 27th annual Verano de Cuento festival kicks off this Friday at 9:00 p.m. at the El Sauzal Theater, cementing the Tenerife municipality as a key hub for preserving and sharing oral traditions in the Canary Islands. The festival has become a must-attend event for both storytelling professionals and enthusiasts.

The opening night is designed for adult audiences, with free entry available until the theater reaches capacity. The evening begins with a performance by Jesús Bayón, featuring a show centered on memory and self-reflection. Following him, Laura Escuela will present a piece that uses folk tales to explore the connection between human nature and the animal world.

On Saturday, the festival shifts its focus to families starting at 11:00 a.m. The Títeres Tragaluz puppet company will open the day’s program with a show that uses a rodent character to encourage a love of reading and highlight the importance of passing down stories to children.

Beyond the performances, the festival plays a vital role in the growing movement to revive storytelling as a way to bring communities together. By hosting these events in El Sauzal rather than in major commercial centers, the festival helps keep an ancient art form alive while building a dedicated audience outside of traditional cultural hubs.
