25-Year-Old Man Dies in Drowning Incident off Tenerife Coast
A 25-year-old man has died after drowning in the Punta Prieta area of Güímar, Tenerife, prompting renewed warnings about coastal safety in the Canary Islands.
Safety on the Canary Islands coastline is back in the spotlight following a tragedy in Güímar, Tenerife, this Wednesday. A 25-year-old man died in the Punta Prieta area, highlighting the ongoing risks bathers face in the archipelago, where drowning remains a leading cause of accidental death.
Emergency services were alerted shortly after 8:30 p.m. after bystanders pulled the man from the water. Witnesses began performing CPR immediately, a vital intervention in the critical first minutes of a cardiac arrest.
When the Tenerife Fire Consortium arrived, they took over life-saving efforts until the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) reached the scene. Despite the medical team’s best efforts to provide advanced life support, they were unable to revive the man and were forced to confirm his death.
The Civil Guard is now investigating the circumstances of the incident. This tragedy serves as a somber reminder to exercise extreme caution when swimming, particularly in areas where currents and coastal terrain can make it difficult to return to shore, even for strong swimmers.
