24th Canary Islands–Madeira International Regatta Sets Sail from Tenerife

The 24th Canary Islands–Madeira International Regatta sets sail on September 1st, continuing a long-standing tradition that strengthens the nautical ties between the two archipelagos. Organizers confirmed that the race will depart from the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, once again highlighting the city’s importance as a key hub for offshore sailing.

Supported by the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and sailing federations from Spain and Portugal, the event has been a staple of Atlantic maritime culture since 1978. Since 1991, the starting point has rotated between Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Tenerife, cementing the race as the longest-running sporting connection between these Macaronesian regions.

This year’s fleet features nearly 150 sailors aboard approximately 30 cruisers, ranging from 11 to 16 meters in length. The crews face a 262-nautical-mile (485-kilometer) journey to Funchal. With forecasts calling for northeasterly winds of 15 to 20 knots and 1.5-meter waves, the fastest boats are expected to reach the finish line in about 35 hours, with most of the fleet arriving within 48 hours.

Coordinated by the Real Club Náutico de Tenerife and the Clube Naval do Funchal, the event will conclude with a trophy ceremony on September 5th at Quinta Calaça in Madeira. More than just a race, the regatta highlights the value of cross-border cooperation, with the Portuguese Navy and regional port authorities working together to ensure the safety of this historic Atlantic crossing.
