1987 Tenerife Carnival's Iconic "Tajaraste" Costume on Display
The iconic 300-kilogram "Tajaraste" fantasy costume, famously carried by 1987 Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival Queen Mónica Raquel Estévez, is now on temporary display at the Real Casino de Santa Cruz.
The 1987 Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival was a truly memorable year, known for its international reach and significant events. Even today, it holds public interest. One of its most famous pieces, the "Tajaraste" fantasy costume, worn by Queen Mónica Raquel Estévez, is currently on temporary display. You can see it in the hall of the Real Casino de Santa Cruz, located in Plaza de la Candelaria.
Designed by Leo Martínez for Almacenes El Kilo, this costume is famous for two reasons. First, its stunning look: a modern take on traditional Canarian clothing, adorned with crystals and feathers. Second, the incredible physical challenge it posed. Mónica Raquel Estévez, at just sixteen, became the youngest Carnival Queen ever by carrying the massive 300-kilogram structure. Back then, costumes didn't have wheels or other mobility aids, making her achievement even more impressive.
The year 1987 was also a landmark for the Tenerife Carnival itself. The event set a Guinness World Record when 200,000 people gathered in Plaza de España to dance to the music of Celia Cruz. This huge turnout, along with the buzz created by the official poster designed by artist Jiri Georg Dokoupil, made it a truly significant year, both culturally and popularly.
Normally, the "Tajaraste" fantasy is part of the permanent exhibition at the Casa del Carnaval de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where visitors can admire its grand design and intricate craftsmanship. Its current display at the Real Casino offers a special chance to see this iconic piece of Carnival history up close, bringing to life the spirit of that time and the legacy of those who made it happen.
