18th-Century Altarpiece Restored at Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s Church of La Concepción

The recent restoration of the Saint James the Apostle altarpiece at the Church of La Concepción in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is more than just a technical project; it is a vital step in reclaiming the city's history. This 18th-century masterpiece is officially recognized as an Asset of Cultural Interest, valued both for its artistic significance within the Canarian school and its deep symbolic meaning. It stands above the final resting place of Lieutenant General Antonio Gutiérrez de Otero y Santayana, the hero who defended the city against Horatio Nelson’s British fleet in 1797.

The 63,970-euro project successfully reversed over two centuries of decay. Using careful, non-invasive techniques, experts stabilized the wooden structure, which had been damaged by water leaks and wood-boring insects. A major highlight of the restoration was the removal of a 1944 layer of paint, which revealed the original gray and blue tones from the early 19th century. These colors, paired with gilded moldings, connect the altarpiece to the era when Saint James became the city’s co-patron—a status closely linked to the victory on July 25th.

Isabel de Esteban, from the Island Directorate of Historical Heritage, noted that the process provided a clearer understanding of the piece’s history. To maintain authenticity, the team avoided guessing what missing parts might have looked like, choosing instead to preserve what remained. Located near the tombstone of musician Teobaldo Power, this area of the church remains a cornerstone of local heritage. By restoring this altarpiece, the Island Council has not only saved a physical treasure but has also returned a tangible piece of history to the public, honoring the generations who have shaped the city’s identity.
