140 Santa Cruz Officers Missed Gun Training
Last year, 140 Santa Cruz de Tenerife Local Police officers were not fully ready for duty due to missing required gun training, prompting the launch of new programs and instructor hiring to address the shortfall.
Last year, many officers in the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Local Police weren't fully ready for duty because they hadn't completed their required gun training. According to Gladis de León, the city's Security Councillor, 140 officers missed this essential shooting practice, which is a must for them to use their standard firearms.
In contrast, 196 officers did complete the training during the same time. The 140 officers who missed out did so for reasons like long-term sick leave or other unstated issues. The councillor also explained that the training was hard to keep going because they couldn't use the Canarian Police's shooting range and didn't have enough qualified instructors.
Regular gun training is crucial for keeping citizens safe and officers themselves safe, ensuring they are skilled and follow proper procedures. To address this, the Security Academy has started new training programs. These will run until they hire more shooting instructors, a process that is already underway.
